If you've started Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or another GLP-1 medication — or you're taking peptides as part of a wellness protocol — and you've been noticing more hair in your brush or in the shower drain, you're not imagining it. And you're definitely not alone. We're hearing this from clients in the chair more and more, and we want to be the ones to actually explain what's going on.
Why GLP-1s and Peptides Can Cause Hair Thinning
GLP-1 receptor agonists (the class of drugs that includes Ozempic and Wegovy) work by suppressing appetite and slowing digestion. That's great for weight loss — but your body interprets rapid weight loss or significant caloric restriction as a form of stress. And your hair follicles respond to stress by hitting the brakes.
The result is a type of shedding called telogen effluvium — where a larger-than-normal percentage of your hair follicles shift out of the growth phase and into the resting (and then shedding) phase all at once. You won't notice it immediately; there's usually a lag of two to four months between the trigger and the shedding. So by the time you realize something's off, you may already be several months into your GLP-1 journey.
Peptides — particularly those used for body composition, fat loss, or hormonal optimization — can cause a similar response. Any time the body is going through significant metabolic change, the hair is often one of the first places you'll see it.
What This Actually Looks Like
We're not talking about bald patches or dramatic hair loss in most cases. What clients describe to us is more like:
- Hair feeling thinner overall, especially at the crown and temples
- A ponytail that suddenly feels much smaller
- More shedding than usual when washing or brushing
- Styles that used to hold all day now falling flat quickly
- The scalp becoming more visible under certain lighting
It's enough to make you feel self-conscious — especially when you're otherwise feeling great about the health progress you're making. You've worked hard to feel good. Your hair shouldn't be the thing that takes that away.
The Good News: It's Usually Temporary
Telogen effluvium triggered by GLP-1s and peptides is typically temporary. As your body adjusts to its new weight and your nutrition stabilizes, the shedding usually slows and the follicles return to their normal growth cycle. Most people see improvement within six to twelve months of the initial trigger.
But "temporary" is cold comfort when you're living it right now. And that's exactly where we come in.
How Hair Extensions Bridge the Gap
This is one of the most powerful things extensions can do — and it's not talked about enough. While you wait for your natural hair to recover, NBR (Natural Beaded Row) extensions give you back the volume, length, and density that feel like you right now.
Unlike some extension methods that can put stress on already-fragile hair, NBR is specifically designed to be gentle. The weight is distributed along a row that sits with — not against — your natural hair growth pattern. There are no glues, no heat bonds, no harsh chemicals anywhere near your scalp. For someone whose hair is in a sensitive season, that matters enormously.
Extensions also do something unexpected: they make your hair easier to manage during the thinning phase. Thicker, longer hair holds a style longer, so you're washing less frequently. Less washing means less mechanical stress on the follicles that are trying to recover. It's a quiet, practical benefit on top of the confidence boost.
What to Tell Your Stylist
If you're on a GLP-1 or taking peptides, please tell us. There's zero judgment here — the landscape of women's wellness has changed dramatically, and we're here to support wherever you are in that journey. Knowing what's going on with your body helps us recommend the right extension method, the right weight and row placement, and the right at-home care routine to protect what you have while we add what you want.
We also want to be honest with you about timing. If your shedding is very active right now, we might recommend waiting a few weeks or adjusting the approach. A thorough consultation is always the first step.
You Shouldn't Have to Choose Between Your Health and Your Hair
GLP-1s and peptides are doing something meaningful for a lot of women. Hair thinning is a real side effect, but it doesn't have to be the trade-off you just accept. Come talk to us. Let's look at your hair together, have an honest conversation, and figure out the best path forward for you.
Because you deserve to feel like yourself — all of you — while you're doing the work.
