If you searched for a hair salon in San Rafael because you are a stylist looking for your next chair, read this before you apply anywhere.

Salon Bilancio is hiring. We have room for an experienced stylist, an assistant, and someone at the front desk. We are on 4th Street downtown, we have been here since 2008, and we are Aveda Artists who also work with Redken Shades EQ. We are particular about who joins us, and it is only fair to tell you why up front.

Who our clients are

Our guests are women, mostly 30 to 50s, who come to us for color, cutting, and Natural Beaded Rows hand-tied extensions. They are classy and a little conservative (not necessarily politically, just style). They want natural, finished hair that looks like them on their best day, not a statement. Think a mom enjoying middle-age bliss, not a trend.

We hire people our clients feel at home with. That is not a small thing. The person at the front desk and the stylist at the next station are part of why a guest trusts us with a four-figure extension investment.

What we are looking for

Experience, first. If you are a licensed stylist with real time behind the chair, color work, and a calm, warm way with guests, we want to talk to you. If you are newer, that is what the assistant role and our apprenticeship are for. We will teach you. We just will not put you on a stylist's clients before you are ready.

And a fit with our look and feel. We are natural and classy. We are not vibrant hair, not grunge, not pierced and tattooed head to toe. We are not edgy or in your face. If your personal style is bright and bold, we are upfront that it is not the room for you, and there are salons where it is a perfect match.

Why we are this specific

Nina came up through a two-year apprenticeship, trained in the Vidal Sassoon method in cutting and Aveda Color Artistry. That is why this is a teaching salon with its own ten-week training plan, not a booth rental where everyone does their own thing. When the whole team shares one standard of natural, classy work, the clients feel it, and they stay.

This week we turned away applicants who were not the right fit, and it is never personal. Sometimes it is experience. Sometimes it is that our calm, conservative flow is not someone's energy. We would rather be clear now than hire the wrong person and let a guest feel it in the chair.

You can read more about who we are and how we came up, and about what the apprenticeship actually teaches if you are earlier in your career.

Come see if it fits

The best way to know is to sit with us. We are hosting an open house. Stop by, drop off your resume, and hang out with the team for a bit. Relaxed, not formal. Not pajamas, just come as the professional version of you and see if you like the room.

If you want to apply ahead of time, start here: careers application. For the assistant role specifically, here is what that job is really like.
